SWIRLING WAVE SAPPHIRE

Continually depicting the natural world, Arje Griegst series of rings in the second half of the nineties brings a new and highly articulated language to his ongoing fascination with the ocean. Opposite currents collide in gold crests and troughs, with rubies emulating rosy sunsets or diamonds suspended between rocaille swells.

WAVE HISTORY

Unlike modernism’s quest for calm, clean lines, Arje wanted to capture the transient, ambiguous and powerful forces of nature that can’t be tamed whilst at the same time demonstrating their ferocity. He sought to capture the water’s movements and create a stylised image of the complex and contradictory formations that can occur on the surface of the ocean.

WAVE RING, 21K GOLD WITH A FACET CUT RUBY AND SWIRLING WAVE RING, 18K GOLD WITH A CABOCHON CUT SAPPHIRE, 1996-2000.

“I wanted to capture the water’s movements and create a stylised image of the complex and contradictory formations that can occur on the surface of water” - Arje Griegst

BIG WAVE RING, 18K GOLD WITH 20 TW/VVS DIAMONDS AND SMALL WAVE RING, 18K GOLD WITH 15 TW/VVS DIAMONDS.

The waves unfold themselves into golden bands and appear seductively light. It is as if the surging water itself has given them their form.

SWIRLING WAVE SAPPHIRE: An 18K gold ring with a blue cabochon sapphire made in Denmark by fine jewellery designer Arje Griegst. The surface of the gold has indents that look like honeycomb or little peaks and troughs of a choppy ocean surface. On top of the ring in its centre is a deep blue, smooth cabochon sapphire. The ring has been placed on a piece of sculptural grey-green plaster that resembles a jagged cliff edge, photographed on a white backdrop.
