BIG WAVE RAW RUBY

Continually depicting the natural world, Arje Griegst series of rings in the second half of the nineties brings a new and highly articulated language to his ongoing fascination with the ocean. Opposite currents collide in gold crests and troughs, with rubies emulating rosy sunsets or diamonds suspended between rocaille swells.

WAVE HISTORY

Unlike modernism’s quest for calm, clean lines, Arje wanted to capture the transient, ambiguous and powerful forces of nature that can’t be tamed whilst at the same time demonstrating their ferocity. He sought to capture the water’s movements and create a stylised image of the complex and contradictory formations that can occur on the surface of the ocean.

SKETCH CREATED FOR A WAVE SCULPTURE, 2008.

SCULPTURE

The material was Arje's co-creator, wether he worked in gold, silver, porcelain or in larger formats such as this Wave sculpture, he had an exquisite feeling for the dynamic between precision and fluidity, hardness and softness, material and form, Arje brought a rare sense of vibrating splendour inspired by the beauty of the natural and mythical worlds.
