We are thrilled to be able to re-issue The Spira cutlery exclusively produced by Georg Jensen for Griegst, 2021.

Ever since Arje Griegst made his first sketch of a fruit-saving set in 1948, the creation of a cutlery had been on his mind. In the early 1970s Arje started to contemplate and experiment and in 1980 he completed the first prototypes. It was underway for 22 years and finally unveiled in 2002, rewriting the rulebook on what cutlery should look like. The cutlery was shortly taken out of production.

The cutlery was named Spira, the Danish word for sprout, and was crafted from Sterling silver. The Spira cutlery for Georg Jensen was meant to complement a table set with the Triton dinnerware for Royal Copenhagen and the Xanadu glasses for Holmegaard.

The Spira cutlery truly resembles no other cutlery and stands out in its bodily and almost spiritual shape, with each handle winding asymmetrically upwards like flower stalks ending in a bud as a green asparagus.

As a symbol of growth, knives curl at the ends like baby ferns about to unfold while spoons and forks have bud finials. The comfortable handles wind asymmetrically like flower stalks before stretching out into utensils proper – an elegant bending of what characterises utensils. It is with great pleasure that the house has re-issued The Spira cutlery.
